Anatomy of a Udyam Registration Number

Every Udyam Number follows a strict 19-character format. Each segment encodes specific information about your registration:

UDYAM-MH-04-0123456

📛 UDYAM

Fixed prefix denoting the unified MSME registration system. Replaced Udyog Aadhaar from 1 July 2020.

🗺️ State Code (2 letters)

The 2-letter Indian state code where the enterprise is registered, e.g., MH (Maharashtra), KA (Karnataka), DL (Delhi).

📍 District Code (2 digits)

The numeric district code within that state. Each state assigns sequential district numbers per its administrative boundaries.

🔢 Serial Number (7 digits)

A unique 7-digit sequence assigned by the Udyam portal. Permanent for the lifetime of your registration.

Why Verify Your Udyam Number?

Whether you're applying for a bank loan, registering on GeM, claiming MSME tender preferences, or filing for the CGTMSE guarantee — most institutions verify your URN against the official Udyam database. Catching a format error before submitting saves time and avoids paperwork rejections.

🏦

For bank loans & CGTMSE

Banks verify your URN against the Udyam portal before sanctioning MSME-priority loans or CGTMSE collateral-free guarantees. An incorrect URN delays sanction.

🛒

For GeM & tenders

GeM seller registration and central/state government tender bids require URN validation. Wrong format = registration error or lost bid eligibility.

For your own records

If your certificate was filed by an agent and you weren't given the URN clearly, this tool helps confirm whether the number you have is even structurally valid.

How to Do Official Udyam Verification on the Government Portal

Our format checker confirms the structure of your Udyam URN. For complete Udyam verification — confirming the URN is officially registered and active in the government database — follow these steps:

  1. Visit udyamregistration.gov.in
  2. Click "Print/Verify" in the top menu, then "Print Verify Udyam Registration Certificate"
  3. Enter your 19-character URN and the mobile number registered against it
  4. The portal will send an OTP to that mobile, then display the live certificate with current classification (Micro/Small/Medium) and validity status

📌 Important: The portal needs the mobile number that was used during original registration. If you've lost access to that mobile, you'll need to update it through the Udyam grievance portal before verification will work.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the format of a Udyam Registration Number?

A Udyam Registration Number (URN) follows the format UDYAM-XX-NN-NNNNNNN. UDYAM is a fixed prefix. XX is the 2-letter state code (e.g., MH for Maharashtra). NN is the 2-digit district code. The final 7 digits are a unique sequence number. Total length is 19 characters including dashes.

How can I verify my Udyam number is real?

Our tool here checks the format. To verify the URN is officially registered with the Government of India and active, visit udyamregistration.gov.in → "Print/Verify Udyam Registration Certificate" and enter your URN + mobile number. The portal displays the live, signed certificate.

I lost my Udyam Number — how do I find it?

On udyamregistration.gov.in click "Forgot Udyam Number" under Login. You'll need your Aadhaar-linked mobile to receive an OTP. If your mobile is no longer accessible, you must update it through the Udyam grievance portal first. Step-by-step guide here.

What does each part of the Udyam Number mean?

Example: UDYAM-MH-04-1234567. UDYAM = fixed prefix. MH = Maharashtra state code. 04 = Pune district code (varies by state). 1234567 = unique 7-digit serial number for this specific enterprise.

Is my Udyam Number valid forever?

Yes. Udyam Registration is one-time with lifetime validity. No annual renewal, no expiry. Your URN remains the same even when your tier classification (Micro/Small/Medium) changes automatically based on latest ITR & GST data.

My number starts with UDYOG instead of UDYAM — is that valid?

Numbers starting with UDYOG are old Udyog Aadhaar Memorandum (UAM) numbers issued before July 2020. These are no longer recognised as MSME proof. You must migrate to the new Udyam system at udyamregistration.gov.in. We can do the migration for you.

Does the format checker confirm my Udyam is real?

No — only the official Udyam portal can confirm a URN exists in the government database. Our format checker tells you if the structure is valid (correct length, valid state code, correct dash positions). A structurally valid URN may or may not be real. Use our link to udyamregistration.gov.in for actual verification.

Can I have two Udyam Numbers for two businesses?

Yes. Each separate enterprise (with different PAN, or distinct business activity under one proprietorship) gets its own URN. You cannot have two URNs for the same enterprise.
